How does a theater scrim work?

Scrim works because of the open weave of the fabric. When lit only from the front they appear solid and opaque and when that light shifts to the U.S. (upstage) side, the open holes between threads help make the fabric appear transparent and all the scenery and actors hiding from behind, miraculously appear.
