Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. ( ΩΨΦ ) is a historically African American fraternity with Greek letters. The fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911, by three junior Howard University students, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman, and their academic advisor, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. Since its founding, the organization has established more than 750 undergraduate and graduate chapters. Omega Psi Phi is the first fraternal organization founded at a historically black university.

History

Since its founding in 1911, the stated purpose of Omega Psi Phi has been “to attract and build a strong and effective force of Beautiful Men devoted to their Cardinal Principles of Masculinity, Scholarship, Perseverance and Elevation.” Throughout the world, many prominent members are recognized as leaders in the arts, academia, sports, entertainment, business, civil rights, education, government and science.

In 1924, at the urging of fraternity member Carter G. Woodson, the fraternity organized Negro Literature and History Week to draw attention to the growing body of scholarly research on African American history. Encouraged by public interest, the event was renamed “Negro Achievement Week” in 1925, and in 1926 the Woodson Association for the Study of Negro Life gave it an expanded national presence as “Negro History Week.” Expanded to a full month in February 1976, the event continues today as Black History Month .

Since 1945, the fraternity has operated a National Social Action Program to address the health, housing, civil rights, and educational needs of African Americans. Omega Psi Phi has been a patron of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) since 1955, donating $350,000 annually to the program.

Omega Psi Phi is a founding member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which consists of nine historically African American women’s societies and fraternities with Greek letters that promote interaction through forums, meetings and other means to share information. and participate in cooperative programs and initiatives around the world.
